The General Grabber ATX and the BF Goodrich KO2 are quite similar at first glance, especially when you look at their tread patterns. However, they excel in different terrains, which means your choice should be based on what you need. The great news is both tires are made in the USA.

The sidewalls of the BF Goodrich KO2 are exceptionally strong.

From my point of view as an expert, the General Grabber ATX offers slightly better responsiveness on roads. This means you can look forward to smooth handling in dry conditions; they sync well with the steering. Wet roads tell another story, which I’ll get into later. The BF Goodrich KO2 won’t let you down on dry surfaces either, offering better side-to-side grip. It’s as if the tire wakes up on corners. While it performs decently on wet surfaces, it truly shines off-road. Both tires also do very well in snow, boasting the 3PMSF rating symbol.

General Grabber ATX

Back in the early 1900s, the General Grabber tire company started in Akron, Ohio. Since the beginning, General Grabber has focused on innovation and moving the industry forward. So much so, that in 1987, Continental, a tire giant, acquired the company.

The General Grabber ATX tire has caught the eye of truck drivers nationwide, thanks to its excellent value. Designed to deliver top-notch traction on various surfaces without breaking the bank, the ATX tire doesn’t disappoint. Plus, it’s 3PMSF-rated, which means it excels in deep snow.

General Grabber aimed to make the ATX tire a jack-of-all-trades. The company sought to enhance its versatility while ensuring daily comfort. As a result, the ATX tirelessly handles road bumps and aggressive potholes, making every drive smoother.

BF Goodrich KO2

The BF Goodrich Tire Company has been crafting tires since the 1870s, showcasing their deep-rooted expertise in creating quality tires. While they might not be as well-known as brands like Continental or Michelin, BF Goodrich stands out as a leading choice for all-terrain tires.

It’s clear that the BF Goodrich KO2 sets the standard in the all-terrain tire category. It’s a tire that others are compared to, renowned for its impressive track record. The KO2 line has been a part of the BF Goodrich family for some time, with the KO2 model itself marking a peak in their tire technology. It combines the strengths of its predecessors with the advantages brought by modern tire innovations.

Therefore, the KO2 is an excellent option for anyone seeking a reliable set of all-terrain tires for their SUV, truck, or CUV. It’s a tire known for its superior design and performance, easily holding its ground, if not surpassing, its more expensive counterparts in several aspects.

Durability Differences

BF Goodrich KO2 is often hailed as the epitome of toughness in tires. These tires are among the most durable you can find.

They boast a robust 3-ply polyester casing. This casing is reinforced with high-strength cords and dual layers of steel belts.

On top of this, two layers of a special polymer compound, nylon, are added. Uniquely, this nylon layer is spirally wound, extending over the sidewalls for enhanced strength.

While many focus on the 3-ply side construction, they often overlook the additional two layers of nylon, which significantly increase the tire’s durability. In comparison, the Falken Wildpeak AT3w features 4-ply sides.

The General Grabber ATX falls short in this regard. It has a more conventional 2-ply sidewall structure without the reinforcing nylon layer, situated only above two steel belts and a polyamide layer.

However, the tire still holds its ground. Some tires are even less durable. For instance, the Toyo AT3, when compared with the KO2, is noted for its lower durability.

Tread Appearance

The General Grabber ATX grabs attention with three ribs in its core, each boasting full-depth interlocking sipes and notches to boost off-road prowess.

The outer ribs, ready for studs, curve away to meet the shoulder blocks, divided by a wavy longitudinal channel.

At the shoulder, blocks are artfully staggered, featuring a unique siping pattern, yet share the same notch design.

These lugs don’t just add to the performance; they contribute to an appealing sidewall design, with the tire showcasing “General Grabber A/Tx” in white letters on its flanks.

Contrastingly, the BF Goodrich KO2 shares a similar profile. Despite accusations of mimicry, the Grabber is its own beast.

Like its counterpart, the KO2 flaunts three middle ribs with notches and sipes. However, it falls short in crafting distinct longitudinal channels as seen in the Grabber ATX.

Its blocks are scattered, crafting a more untamed maze of tread voids.

The KO2 steps up with heftier shoulder blocks and formidable sidewall lugs, edged for extra grip.

Keep an eye out for triangular stone ejectors nestled among the shoulder blocks, a clever design choice for both tires.

Wear Resistance

General Grabber ATX stands out in tread wear resistance. That’s the main reason it tops my list of all-terrain tires for durability.

This tire tackles wear head-on. It boasts deep tread and a compound enriched with polymers. These polymers keep it both stiff and flexible.

Thanks to the kevlar in its mix, the tire gains extra toughness, resisting chips and cuts. BF Goodrich KO2 shows similar strengths.

Both tires wear down evenly, maintaining their grip as time passes, thanks to full depth siping.

Yet, General Grabber ATX takes the lead.

While BF Goodrich KO2 is tougher, with a 3-ply sidewall enhancing its lifespan, its weight is a drawback. Heavier tires put more pressure on the tread, speeding up wear in comparison.

On Road Performance

Dry Traction

When it comes to gripping the road during dry conditions, the General Grabber ATX stands out. It connects with the steering wheel more effectively, making it very responsive. It sticks to the road better due to more rubber touching the ground. This means it’s quicker to react.

However, the BF Goodrich KO2 shines in its own way, especially during sharp turns. It feels stronger in corners, letting you feel more of the force. This is thanks to its impressive shoulder blocks, which we’ve covered in the appearance section.

Wet Traction

Starting with wet traction, both tires might not wow you. I always suggest keeping traction control active with these tires.

Among the two, the BF Goodrich KO2 steps up slightly. Its sipes on the shoulder areas lock together better, helping in slick conditions. The notches also play a part in this.

The General Grabber ATX, with its lower silica mix, doesn’t see its sipes flexing much. This impacts its side grip, especially noticeable in handling. Its shoulder blocks, crucial for steering, fall short on wet surfaces. Even its Mud-Terrain sibling, the General Grabber X3, outperforms it on wet roads.

Hydroplaning Resistance

When we talk about hydroplaning, we’re looking at how well a tire can glide over water on the road. This ability mainly comes from how the tire’s tread manages to push water out of its way.

Both tires we’re comparing are quite similar. They’re designed with a network of grooves and channels that smoothly direct water away, allowing for easy passage.

However, when we dig into the details, the General Grabber ATX shows a slight edge in hydroplaning resistance in certain sizes, thanks to its tread depth reaching up to 16/32″.

On the other hand, the BF Goodrich KO2 consistently offers a tread depth of 15/32″ across most sizes, with only four exceptions dipping below this.

So, with that bit of extra tread, the Grabber ATX can sometimes give you better performance against hydroplaning.

Noise Reduction

When you’re rolling with off-road tires, you might notice they’re a bit loud. That’s because the big spaces between the tread blocks let air in and, yep, that’s what makes the noise.

But here’s the cool part about these tires: they have something called variable pitch tread. It’s like a secret weapon against noise. So, with these tires, you’re not going to be bothered by too much noise.

However, the Grabber ATX starts to sing a bit louder after hitting 10k miles. On the flip side, the BF Goodrich KO2 keeps things quiet for a much longer ride.

Fuel Efficiency

Now, when it comes to fuel efficiency, neither of these tires is going to win a gold medal. They both like to put up a bit of a fight against rolling smoothly.

But here’s where the General Grabber ATX sneaks ahead: it’s a bit lighter. A lighter tire means less effort to roll, which can be a tiny bit easier on your gas tank.

The BF Goodrich KO2, though, is a bit on the heavier side because it’s built tough with 3 ply sides. More layers mean more weight, and moving heavier stuff means your car needs to work harder.

Just a tip: If the highway is your main stage, you might want to look at P rated tires. They’re like the lightweight champions of rolling resistance. And hey, don’t forget to keep those tires pumped to the right air pressure. It’s a simple trick to help your fuel last longer.

Winter Fun in the Snow

Winter adventures can be tricky, but the great news is both these tires come ready with a special snow rating, rocking the cool 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol.

Yet, in the snowy showdown, the General Grabber ATX takes the lead over its older sibling in every important way.

It zooms faster, stops quicker, and glides around corners with ease.

This tire even tackles thick snow better, thanks to a bit more depth in its tread.

The BF Goodrich KO2 puts up a good fight with its tough sidewalls, but it’s just a tiny step behind.

Remember, though, even with their impressive snowflake badges, these tires can’t take the place of real winter tires.

Off-Road Performance

When the going gets tough, both these tires step up to the challenge.

The BF Goodrich stands out with its durability, shining on rocky paths, while the Grabber ATX excels in handling dirt and gravel with ease.

Sand Driving

Navigating sandy landscapes requires plenty of tire-to-sand contact for traction.

The General Grabber ATX excels here, offering more contact and smoother shoulder blocks to avoid digging in too deeply, which is crucial for maintaining momentum.

In contrast, the BF Goodrich KO2’s aggressive shoulder blocks tend to dig in more, and its stiffer sidewalls don’t help much with traction on inclines.

Traction on Rocks

While the General Grabber ATX might fall short in lateral traction, it performs admirably on rocks and gravel, thanks to stone-ejecting features between its shoulder blocks.

The BF Goodrich KO2 matches this with its own stone ejectors and additional triangular ones in the grooves, ensuring excellent gravel performance. It also boosts sidewall protection with a 3-ply polyester and nylon wrap, enhancing durability and confidence in off-road conditions.

Mud Driving

Mud requires tires that can clear themselves effectively, but neither tire is perfect in this aspect. Their interconnected central ribs struggle with mud clearance.

However, both have staggered shoulder blocks that offer some assistance, though it’s best to avoid deep mud, as they can become clogged quickly.

Among them, the BF Goodrich KO2 might have a slight advantage with its more aggressive shoulder blocks and larger mud scoops, providing better light mud escape capabilities.

Conclusion

The Grabber ATX is better of a performer on dry roads but lacks slightly in lateral traction, this is felt more when things get wet, even off-road. But the tire other than that provides pretty decent traction values on all sorts of terrains, including snow, where it’s significantly better than its bigger brother.

The BF Goodrich KO2 however, still remains a champ, when it comes to durability. Sure, the Grabber is outperforming this tire in a lot of key areas, but with 3 plys sides with 2 extra layers on top, the KO2 still provides the toughest sidewalls that you can get with all-terrain tires.
